Location

College of Engineering, Forestry and Natural Sciences, Northern Arizona University

2112 S. Huffer Ln, Flagstaff, AZ 86011

Scope

Task 1- Project Start Up

1.1 - Background Research

Time was allocated to data collection and background research in order to fully understand the physical conditions, regulations and other constraints.

1.2 - Material Consideration

At least three different types of local Flagstaff rock were considered along with different cement and aggregate types. The chsoe materials were Flagstone and QUIKRETE.

Task 2 – Creation of Samples

2.1 - Mixing

The concrete was composed of QUIKRETE 5000, a commercial grade blend for rapid high strength concrete composed of Portland cement, sand, aggregate or stone, AKKRO-7T a liquid bonding admixture, and FIBERMESH 150 for reinforcement.

2.2 - Sample Molding

A total of 54 specimens of 5"x5"x5" dimensions were created consiting of a 2.5" layer of concret poured onto a 2.5" layer of sandstone.

Task 3 – Data Collection

3.1 - Freeze –Thaw Cycles

The team subjected the sepcimens to a coldweather simulation using a modified version of ASTM C666.

3.2 -Splitting Test

The team subjected the specimens toi a splitting test to observe and record the behavior of the specimen at the interface based on its designated surface roughness using ASTM C496.

3.3 - Compression Testing

During the preliminary testing process the team performed compression testing of concrete to obtain its failure strength using ASTM C116.

Task 4 - Data Analysis

4.1 - Results

The team created an analytical report of the data collected from the laboratory tests.

4.2 - Statistical Analysis

The conclusions from the analysis will determined predicted results based solely on the data obtained thus far.

Task 5 - Project Management

5.1 - Team Meetings

The team met on regular weekly meeting in order to prepare for the client meetings and obtian updates on the status of the project.

5.2 - Client Meetings

The team created meet bi-weekly with the client to update the progress of the project and address any comments or concerns that the client or the team may have come across

Task 6 - Final Deliverables

6.1 - 50% Design Report

The team submitted a 50% design report halfway through the fall 2017 containing the work performed and the data collected up to that point.

6.2 - Final Report

The team submitted a final report containing the analysis of the data collected from the tests and the overall mix design interface behavior under certain conditions.

6.3 - Final Presentation

The final analysis and findings to date were presented at the 14th Annual Arizona Pavements and Materials Conference.
